Every vote counts... or does it?
With the Presidential election looming in the near future, people are gearing up to exercise their all-powerful ability to vote. Citizens have been made to believe that each and every vote is important in determining the success of our future. While voting is an essential part of a functioning democracy, there are some economists that feel that the act of voting is the single greatest waste of time.

2) Explain the main conclusion that is reached in the article "Should everybody vote?"
3) Explain 3 reasons why economists suggest that people should NOT vote.
4) After reading the articles, do you believe that every citizen of voting age should vote? Why or why not?

AP Papers for Panel Session C
Below are the links for the Panel Session C papers. Remember to write 3 questions for each paper and make sure I get those index cards tomorrow morning so you can get credit.
Also, I don't subscribe to the old adage "There is no such thing as a stupid question" so make sure you put thought into your questions!
Due to technical difficulties, the HSE paper (mscience) is not available so if you haven't read that paper yet, don't worry about it. You will not be penalized.

Does Uber undestand the laws of Supply and Demand?
Many of us have been, flailing our arms around hoping that a cab will stop to pick us up. Maybe if I walk down one more avenue. Maybe if we cross the street. Catching a cab can be an exercise in futility. Even worse is the experience inside the cab as your driver attempts to get you from point A to point B while trying to cut off as many cars as possible. It is almost as if every driver is competing for "most aggressive cabbie" and they are all winning.
Wouldn't it be great if there was an alternative? A type of car service that you can arrange on your phone and you could rate the experience? Enter Uber. But some complain that Uber is Unnecessary. Others argue that their pricing system is unfair, or that it takes advantage of riders. Perhaps Uber simply understands the laws of Supply and Demand. Read the articles that follow and answer the questions.

Discussion Questions:
1) Explain Uber's "Surge Pricing." Is this form of Price Discrimination a good thing or a bad thing?
2) Do you think politicians should limit what Uber can charge? Explain one argument in favor of capping Uber fees.
3) How has the expansion of Uber impacted the Taxi market?

Privatize Social Security?
Social Security is running out. This is a fact echoed by the Social Security Administration. Projections indicate that by 2033, the fund will be empty and workers paying into the system will provide enough to pay for 75% of promised benefits. With such a significant problem on the horizon, it is strange that so few politicians are talking about the issue, and even fewer are offering solutions.
A common suggestion to "fix" the looming problem of Social Security insolvency is to Privatize the entire system. This proposal would mean significant changes to the "safety net" that millions of Americans rely on to survive.
Discussion Questions:

Is Technology Ruining Society
Human beings have 3 basic requirements for survival: food, clothing, and shelter. (yes and air) Most people will argue that this list is incomplete without including Cellular phone. While it is true that the cell phone is the last thing people look at before going to sleep and the first thing people look at when they wake up, it was only about 14 years ago when a cell phone was seen as a luxury instead of a necessity. Imagine a time when people had to go long periods of time without knowing the name of that actor in that movie, or when people had to actually look at a map (or visit a local AAA) before a long road trip. We have come a long way as a people, and the rate at which technology is changing our lives is increasing exponentially. With technology developers so focused on what they can do, perhaps it is time to start questioning what they should do. Is technology always a good thing? Are we still progressing or is technology actually ruining society?
In order to develop your argument, you should read each of the articles below. In addition, you should research the topic further in order to defend your position on whether technology is helping or hurting society. You will then answer the following questions:
1) Explain one way in which technology has been positive for society.
2) Explain one way in which technology has been negative for society.
3) Do you believe that technology is more beneficial or damaging for young people? Explain.
4) Overall, do you believe that technology is ruining society? Why or why not?

What do All-You-Can-Eat Buffets and Health Insurance have in common?
As somebody who loves a good (and sometimes bad) all-you-can-eat buffet, I consider myself somewhat of an expert on the subject. I even considered majoring in "Chinese Buffet" while in college. Sadly, there is little demand for a buffet expert. I always wondered how buffets actually make money. It turns out that many economists have asked the same question.
Real the article below about Bill Wisth and the economics of all-you-can eat buffets, watch the video, and then answer the questions that follow.
Use the internet to find another article about the Economics of all-you-can-eat buffets in order to answer the second question. Be sure to include the webpage link at the end of your response. You may have to read multiple articles before fully answering the question.

Hayek vs. Keynes 2014
Chocolate vs. Vanilla. Godfather vs. Godfather 2. Left Twix vs. Right Twix. Superman vs. Batman. Like so many other debates throughout history, the Hayek vs. Keynes battle continues to be fought within Government and Economic circles alike.
Keynes' ideas have become the dogma in recent years, but do you believe the pendulum will swing back towards Hayek's free markets and limited government in the foreseeable future? Has society become too reliant on government support to ever allow free markets to work again? Which Economist has the better argument about the role of Government in the economy?
Where do you stand on the issue? What are the best reasons to support your side? Identify the main flaws in the opposing argument.

The Debt Ceiling
Like Bill Murray reliving Groundhog Day over and over again, it seems that the Debt Ceiling debate has once again returned to rear its ugly head. It seems like only last year that congress settled the dispute over the growing government debt... oh wait... it was last year. Unfortunatly, the legal debt limit is fast approaching and congress must once again decide how to deal with the problem. As is ususally the case with terrible problems that could potentially ruin the United States as we know it, there is no clear-cut solution. Republicans and Democrats view the Debt Ceiling (and those to blame for it) very differently.

Hayek vs. Keynes 2013
-F.A. Hayek
"Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone."
-John Maynard Keynes
Who would have thought that the ideas of these two economists would still be relevant over 100 years after ther they were born? Furthermore the central arguments are still being discussed today on Television and in the newspapers. What exactly is the role of government: a dangerous servant or a fearful master? Should markets drive the economy, or should government drive the markets?
Where do you stand on the issue? What are the best reasons to support your side? Identify the main flaws in the opposing argument. In addition to posting your opinion, you will also be responding to one of your classmates' posts.

I would like you to conduct further research on the issue of trade barriers vs. free trade before answering the question.
